OUT Magazine Names Drag Legend, Varla Jean Merman, to Prestigious OUT100 List
Drag legend and iconic performer Varla Jean Merman has been named to OUT Magazine’s esteemed OUT100, an annual honor celebrating the most influential LGBTQ+ individuals across the world.
The OUT100 recognizes leaders who have made significant contributions in various fields and have advanced LGBTQ+ visibility and equality. Merman, known for her sharp wit, vibrant performances, and dedication to LGBTQ+ causes, has been a trailblazer in the drag community for over a decade and a half.
"I’m incredibly honored to be named one of OUT100's Groundbreakers, especially alongside such a respected and inspiring group of people,” said Varla Jean. “It’s a privilege to be recognized among individuals who are making such a meaningful impact on the world. Whenever things get tough in my line of work, I just try to remind myself to not take things too seriously, and at the end of the day, I am just a man in a dress. But being bestowed with such a great honor, to be in 2024's Out100, also reminds me that the art of drag is truly valued by our community in a time when our very existence is being challenged. Thank you, OUT!"
Varla Jean Merman's recognition as one of OUT100’s Groundbreakers shines a spotlight on her ongoing work as an artist, performer, and activist in the face of rising challenges against the drag and LGBTQ+ communities. The honor serves as both a celebration of her career and a call to continue uplifting LGBTQ+ voices and visibility.
Merman’s inclusion on the 2024 list highlights her ongoing leadership and advocacy within the LGBTQ+ community, acknowledging her work on behalf of key causes and her role as an enduring symbol of pride. She joins a roster of other all-star LGBTQ+ figures recognized this year, including Olympian Tom Daley, Oscar-winning actress Jodie Foster, Broadway and film star Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Broadway producer Mark Cortale, actor Jonathan Bennett, and TV host Rachel Maddow, among others.
Varla Jean is currently touring nationwide with her show, “Varla Jean: The Errors Tour.” Upcoming stops include New York City, Phoenix, AZ, Palm Springs, CA, Hartford, CT, and more.
